The BIG Difference of Little Communities

by Little BIG

Exciting news – we were thrilled to see our work featured on Helping Hands TV this week! It’s a moment of pride for us and for the amazing community that makes the Little BIG House so special.

Our foundation was created with a simple yet powerful idea: The Little things make a BIG difference. Like knowing people in your community, having a space to hang out that doesn’t cost you the world and knowing the names of a few neighbours. We aim to create places that aren’t just homes but hubs of connection, kindness, and belonging. And here in Summer Hill, we’re seeing that vision come to life every day at the Little BIG House.

In the recent Helping Hands episode, viewers got a glimpse of how the Little BIG House is breaking through barriers of loneliness and isolation to foster deep, meaningful connections.

“The Little BIG House is our neighborhood hub,” says Sarah Mathews, our CEO. “It’s a place where people come together. We host ninety events a month – everything from board game groups to singing circles, to stock and property investing meetups and beer tastings. It’s all about bringing people together and creating opportunities to connect with your neighbors.”

These events are led by an incredible team of over 50 volunteers and community hosts, each bringing their passion and creativity to make the space truly unique. Whether it’s a yoga class led by Wei Yee, who describes the Little BIG House as feeling like “an extended family – like a warm hug,” or a Seniors Group coordinated by Kerrie Bush, fostering kindness and connection, there’s something for everyone, or you can “fast-track connection” with a singing circle run by the passionate Fiona Maria.

At the Little BIG Foundation, we know that loneliness affects so many people. One in three Australians experience loneliness regularly, and it is reported that 22% of millennials report not having a single close friend. These are the kinds of statistics we’re determined to change. But you don’t have to be experiencing loneliness to take advantage of the Little BIG House. We are for everyone, every day! Find your ‘thing’ and take advantage of the ease of getting to know other people.

Thank you to Helping Hands for sharing our story, and to our wonderful community for making the Little BIG Foundation what it is. Together, we’re proving that even small communities can make a BIG difference. And a HUUUGE thank you to our volunteers and community members for braving the camera. It’s not easy but you all spoke from the heart and did an incredible job in sharing our collective story.
