Why human connection, belonging, and shared spaces matter more than ever
According to the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) 2025 report, From Loneliness to Social Connection, 1 in 4 adults experience social disconnection, and 1 in 6 people worldwide feel lonely on a regular basis. In a world more digitally connected than ever, many people have never felt more alone.
Loneliness is complex, shaped by both physical and psychological barriers. No one solution solves a complex ‘wicked problem’. And so, we’re glad to see it remain a global priority, with the WHO recognising the urgent need to foster meaningful social connection.
At the Little BIG Foundation, we believe in the power of community to make a contribution towards addressing this ‘wicked problem’. That’s why we focus on building welcoming, inclusive spaces and making in-person events as accessible as possible. Ideas, programs, and events driven by community for the community. We recognise the growing degree of loneliness in our own communities and we’re committed to creating change.
By fostering strong, genuine connections, we help people find a place to belong and people they can rely on.
This month alone, local volunteers have been able to quickly get three new connections events up and running, contributing to over 90+ others running throughout the month. What makes this possible is our community and our volunteers, the heart of Little BIG Foundation.
The WHO report reinforces what we’ve long believed: investing in community-led programs is a vital way to reduce social disconnection and improve health and wellbeing. We’ve seen this firsthand in Summer Hill through the ongoing support of our weekly Parents and Seniors Group, one of our longest-running events, and our Variety Concert Night, which began with just two musicians and has since grown into a full evening of community performances.

While loneliness and isolation remain real and persistent challenges, they don’t have to define us. At Little BIG Foundation, we take a positive solution-oriented lens, tackling them one shared space, one conversation, one event at a time.
