Meet Sam Freeman: Chairing Community Connections in Summer Hill

by Little BIG

Meet Sam Freeman, the go-getter, jetsetter and start-up founder who stumbled upon the Little BIG House, liked what he saw and is now the first chair of our Summer Hill Management Committee!

Sam is a recent Inner Westie, having returned from India, where he spent a solid decade soaking in the diverse culture for work. When asked about his overseas adventures, Sam’s eyes lit up as he raved about the vast diversity, great food and unique way of life he has experienced on his journeys. But now, he’s loving living locally and bringing that same energy to Summer Hill.

As Chair of the Committee, Sam’s the one steering the committee to make sure the Little BIG House stays true to its roots as a community hub. The Management Committee are responsible for representing the local perspective back to the Board, deliberating volunteer event proposals and ensuring the place is buzzing. He brings a wealth of business experience and a high attention to detail but also a knack for spotting the most fun events.

And speaking of fun, Sam’s got his sights set on some killer events like beer nights (because let’s face it, it’s a must in the Inner West), food workshops and creative opportunities. So, if you spot Sam around, give him a high-five (you might have to jump, he is pretty tall) for the hours of volunteering he offers this community.

We were lucky enough to have a chat with Sam and learn more about him. Take a read below:

We’ve been part of the Summer Hill community since…

My wife and I moved to Sydney in April 2023, having lived in India for 10 years. We found a rental and settled into Summer Hill pretty quickly. We found the Little BIG House on social media, and we started seeing some really great events being advertised. I reached out and had a couple of conversations with the team over a few months and was lucky enough to find a way I could volunteer and contribute in late 2023.

When I’m not volunteering, you can find me…

At a baseball game, having a cocktail at the Temperance, or working on my start-up with my best mate.

Tell us about your business and what it offers the local community?

My business, WRK4CE, helps local Aged Care providers find the best nurses and carers from around the world, to contribute towards the highest quality care for their residents. By doing this we are helping the elderly in our community achieve a greater quality of life in their retirement, whilst also welcoming new members of our community to experience all the beauty of the Australian lifestyle.

I love living and working in this community because…

Summer Hill is the coming together of such a lovely group of people and businesses. I love the community that surrounds us here and how so many of the businesses give back to the community in one way or another.

My favourite thing about Little BIG is…

As someone who works from home most of the time, I love how the Little BIG House brings people together. I know what it is like to feel lonely, or separated from others, so having a place where I can go, meet people on my terms and enjoy the fantastic array of events is something I appreciate a lot.

The top thing on my bucket list is…

I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to travel extensively – and I want to keep doing so! I still have many places to visit and experience on my bucket list. My wife and I would love to be able to start a family in Summer Hill, that’s also on the bucket list.

I’m most grateful for…

I’m extremely grateful for the opportunities I have had in my life to live and work around the world, experiencing different cultures and traditions (especially trying new foods). After all this, to end up in Summer Hill, where everything is so beautiful and tranquil is truly delightful.

The last little BIG thing / action I did for someone else or received from someone was…

Moving to Sydney has been difficult as we didn’t have many friends here to start with, but through the Little BIG we’ve struck up some wonderful friendships with people in Summer Hill who have helped us acclimatise back into Australian life. Even the little things like a restaurant recommendation we got last week has helped us find our feet.
